Choosing a massage table is a big decision and an investment.

On this page, we’ve gathered answers to the most frequently asked questions to help guide your decision and provide useful care tips to extend the life of your table.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard sizes for massage tables?

Standard widths range : from 28" to 30", ideal for both comfort and access.

Wider tables : (30”+) offer more space but are heavier and may strain the practitioner’s back.

Narrower tables : (25”-27”) are lighter and easier to carry but may feel tight for larger clients.

What is the weight capacity of a massage table?

Working weight is the max force (pressure + weight) a table can handle during treatment. Most support 200–450 lbs; premium tables up to 750 lbs.

Static weight is the total evenly distributed weight a table can hold—usually 1000–3000 lbs.

We recommend to always allow a safety margin beyond your clients’ weight for intense treatments.

What is the best size for a portable massage table?

The most common table width is 28" to 30", which offers enough space for most clients. For mobile therapists, it’s best to choose a table that weighs under 35 lbs and has a lightweight aluminum frame.

If portability is a top priority, narrower tables at 25"–28" are easier to carry and fit into smaller vehicles. However, they may be less comfortable for larger clients.

Moreover, foldable designs that includes carry-on cases will be a big help in simplifying set up and transport.

How much should a portable massage table weigh?

Generally portable tables weigh around 28–35 lbs. At this weight, they generally strike good balance between portability & comfort. However, it is important to note that the material and foam density affect the overall weight of the table, For instance, heavier models may have more cushioning and width but are harder to transport.

What’s the difference between wooden and aluminum frames?

  • Aluminum: Lighter, durable, corrosion-resistant, and offers better portability which makes it great for frequent travel
  • Wood: Heavier, appears more elegant and often more stable; modern lightweight woods can match aluminum but may cost more .

What’s the difference between foam types?

  • High-density foam = firm support, long-lasting
  • Thickness: 2" = more support, better for deep treatments
  • 2.5"-3" = more comfort, absorbs pressure
  • Multi-layered foam = offers both comfort and support.

Maintaining your massage Table

To best maintain your massage table, we always recommend using quality massage table sheets or disposable paper sheets. After each session, clean the table surface with mild soapy water.

Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent material warping or damage over time.

If you’re using a PU leather cover, it’s generally safe to use disinfectant sprays, but it would be best avoid harsh chemicals that may degrade the material over time.

Moreover, it's important to check the brand-specific care instructions for your massage table, especially when it comes to cleaning hinges, joints, and other structural parts.

Most common materials found in massage tables

Most massage tables are upholstered with either PU leather or PVC. Both are types of synthetic leather, but they differ significantly in quality and comfort.

PU Leather (Polyurethane):
Softer, more eco-friendly, and more durable than PVC. It has a smooth, skin-friendly feel and resists wear over time. All Lierre massage tables are made with PU leather for optimal comfort and longevity.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):
A budget-friendly option often found in lower-end tables. While easy to clean, PVC is less breathable and can feel less pleasant against the skin.
