Acupuncture Point Taiyang (EX-HN5)

Acupuncture Point Taiyang (EX-HN5)

Acupuncture as a Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years. It requires insertion of thin acupuncture needles through your skin at strategic points on the body. All the points are connected by meridians, and they are responsible for overall health. Additionally, TCM practitioners believe that there are more than 2,000 acupuncture points in the human body. One of the most important point is Point Taiyang.

What is Point Taiyang?

Point Taiyang is a commonly used extra point. In terms of martial arts, it is a point that can be fatal. Modern medicine has proved that hitting on this acupuncture point will cause a temporary faint or even a concussion. In Chinese, the meaning of Taiyang is the sun: the source of light, warmth, and vigor. In traditional Chinese medicine, Taiyang is one of the twelve meridians. It is the longest of all meridians and contains a reflecting point for each of the body organs.

What is Point Taiyang used for?

Point Taiyang is typically used for headaches, dizziness, eye and/or sinus issues:

  • Temporal, one-sided migraine headaches
  • Some eye issues: swelling, pain, and photophobia
  • Local point for toothache, facial paralysis, and pain
  • For swelling of the breast (bleed bilaterally)

How to find Point Taiyan?

EX-HN5 (Taiyang) is located in the centre of this depression. This point tends to be pressure-sensitive, especially with temporal headaches. Patients often get relief by using acupressure on this point. On the temple, it is located in the depression about one finger-breadth posterior to the midpoint between the lateral end of the eyebrow and the outer canthus. Here are several steps to help you find Point Taiyang. Firstly, draw a line between the lateral extremity of the eyebrow and the outer canthus of the eye. Next, palpate from the midpoint of this line in a lateral direction, until you can feel a distinct depression in the temporal bone.

What are the benefits of massaging Point Taiyang?

Benefits of massage Taiyang:

In conclusion, Taiyang is an effective acupuncture point for headaches, dizziness, eye and/or sinus issues. You can massage this point every day before sleep to keep healthy and calm down your mind. However, if you have any health conditions that we are mentioned above, it is better to go for a therapist such as an acupuncturist. Acupuncturists would use acupuncture needles to accelerate your healing process. You do not need to worry about acupuncture needles because high-quality needles are very sharp while smooth. These two characteristics indicate that you will feel no pain during insertion.
