Vanilla is the fruit of a variety of tropical creeping orchids. These are the only orchids grown for other than ornamental reasons. There are several vanilla cultivars, the best known of which are vanilla tahitensis (Tahitian vanilla), vanilla planifolia, also called vanilla fragrans. The cultivation of vanilla requires special care to be given to vanilla pods, one of the most precious and expensive agricultural products in the world.
