What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha refers to both a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique and the tool used to perform it. The treatment involves gently scraping the skin to promote circulation, release tension, and support the body’s natural healing process. Gua Sha tools are commonly used for facial massage, body care, and muscle recovery, and come in various shapes and materials like jade, rose quartz, porcelain, and basalt.

What is Gua Sha?

First, Always Prep the Skin. Before using a Gua Sha tool, make sure to apply a facial oil, cream, or massage lotion to clean skin.

Avoid use Gua Sha on dry skin — it can cause irritation and discomfort.

Once the skin is prepped, you can select the right Gua Sha tool based on your needs.

Gua Sha can be used on both the face and body, but each area may require a different shape, material, or technique for the best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Gua Sha every day?

Yes — gentle facial use can be done daily. For body scraping or deeper pressure, 2–3 times per week is ideal.

Which shape is best for beginners?

The heart shape is a great starting point for facial massage. It’s easy to handle and fits most contours.

How do I clean my Gua Sha tool?

For crystal, porcelain, or stone tools, wash gently with warm water and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals, and allow the tool to air dry completely.

For metal tools (like IASTM or surgical stainless steel), follow your clinic’s hygiene protocol — these often require medical-grade disinfectants or alcohol-based cleaning to meet professional standards.

Can Gua Sha leave marks?

Light redness is normal, especially on the body. Avoid scraping too hard — marks should fade within a couple of days.

Which material should I choose?

Crystal is cooling and gentle; Bian stone is great for heat and deep work; porcelain is perfect for sensitive skin.
